Ratshaker is a game that comes to us from Sunscorched Studios. It was released on PC towards the end of 2024 but is now finding its way to PlayStation. A bizarre game that I can’t believe exists, Ratshaker is exactly what it says on the non-corporeal box; a game about shaking a rat. Which left me starring at the title screen wondering, “is this a metaphor for something? Some kind of deep double entendre that I can’t seem to grasp? Or is it just literally a game about pest control?” I couldn’t understand.
You then sit down to play the game and you’re like, “Alright, so it’s a guy shaking a rat.” But then you think to yourself, “Why? Why is the guy shaking the rat? What does he know that I don’t know? What is it about shaking that rat that is so god damn entertaining?” Then I gripped that controller and I started shaking that rat and I instantly understood. The first time you begin shaking that rat and the angelic timbre resonates out of his maw something changes inside you. You become whole. You feel completely at ease. You have seen the face of god. A wave of religious euphoria washes over your brain and sends an electric shiver down your spine and throughout your whole being. You suddenly know all of the laws that govern the universe. You can see through the fabric of reality. You can’t go back. You can’t go back to a time when you weren’t shaking that rat. You WON’T go back to a time when you weren’t shaking that rat. PAIN AND SUFFERING WILL ENCOMPASS ANY WHO INTERFERE WITH MY HALLOWED RITUAL!...Sorry...
It’s just that this game is pure art, I know we were just talking about this in my last review but this game certainly has a cultivated eloquence to it. I have all the necessary words to explicate the narrative for you, gentle audience, but I will not spoil it. This art piece must be experienced. If you don’t believe me, just look at these masterpieces from within the world of the game itself. There are a cornucopia of rat themed art pieces spread throughout this games surreal world. A depiction of the truth behind the silly facade. Perhaps something the developer wished could be the focus but knows they could not escape the angelic call of the RAT.
So anyways, there I was minding my own business, shaking my rat when I realized that those rat bastards Silent Hilled me. There is a healthy amount of disturbing imagery and unsettling sounds in this game. There are a few good jump scares that got me. The overall atmosphere is tense, but the screaming from the rat as you shake him will have you chuckling to break up the terror. The game can be completed in under an hour so it’s not a long game. Sitting at around an hour of gameplay, it’s not a huge time commitment, and for only three dollars you’ve got nothing to lose in jumping in and shaking the rat yourself. Ratshaker gets a 9/10, it’s excellent! For Hardwired, I’ve been Levi Barner. AAAAHHHHHHAAAAAHHHHHHH HARDWIRED IS THE BEST PLACE TO WATCH GAME REVIEWS! SUBSCRIBE!
