The heat is gone this morning, but the heat is on starting tomorrow!

It’s good to know that it’s still the cold weather season. After this weekend and next week’s weather, y’all might be questioning what time of the year it is. If it wasn’t for all of the candy canes, elves, Santas, and trees, the weather might make you think it’s Halloween! Well, I guess we start putting up Christmas decorations that early, but that’s neither here nor there. After this morning, you’ll need to do some arts and crafts to change that ugly Christmas sweater into an ugly Christmas tee.

This morning is a chilly one! Thanks to a cold front sneaking through midday yesterday, our morning temperatures this morning have tumbled! We’re starting out the morning with temperatures in the mid-30s and the entire area is running between a 20° and 30° drop in temperatures from yesterday morning. Despite the significant difference from one morning to the next, we’re not seeing as big of a difference this afternoon. Instead of settling in the lower 70s, today’s highs settle in the mid-60s. The big warm up is thanks to a quick return of south winds today. South winds will gust to near 20 MPH this afternoon and near 30 MPH tonight too!

The south breeze helps to prop morning temperatures up tomorrow morning as we kick off the day in the mid-to-upper 40s, but Saturday’s big weather story is the record heat. High temperatures will settle in the upper 70s and may even briefly reach 80°! Saturday’s record high is 78° and it is expected to fall with our forecast high of 79°. Gusty south winds remain strong during the day Saturday with gusts between 25 and 30 MPH ahead of a cold front swinging through Saturday night. The late-weekend cold front doesn’t have much colder air attached to it and actually will not be strong enough to push some of the returning moisture away. Sunday will be cooler in the afternoon as highs only warm into the mid-60s, but the lack of dry air pushing in will keep our skies generally partly cloudy all Christmas week long.

Although north winds will briefly return Sunday, high pressure will take control of the weather pattern across the United States and parks itself right across Texas next week. All week long next week, outside of Monday’s morning lows in the lower 50s, will feature out-the-door temperatures near our average high in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Breezy south winds hang around throughout the week giving us a Spring-like feel with highs each day settling in the mid-to-upper 70s. We might even push 80° for a high temperature Thursday, Friday, and Saturday!

There should be a cold front pushing through late next weekend and that could bring us the return of a few scattered showers and slightly cooler temperatures, but our attention may turn to a bigger storm system pushing through in the final few days of the year that could bring us colder temperatures and potentially strong storms. The strong storm chance is still close to two weeks away and could potentially arrive around December 30th, but it’s too early for specifics on whether that storm system will even reach our area. Should next weekend’s cold front push through, we may avoid the late-year storm system. If it doesn’t, the chances for a stormy end to the year will increase.
