WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Here’s this week’s Restaurant Report Card for Central Texas:

Pei Wei Express at 6001 West Waco Drive in the Richland Mall in Waco failed a renewal inspection with a 74. (26 demerits)

According to the food safety worker, the chopped cabbage, diced zucchini, some sliced carrots, green beans and mushrooms were not kept at the right temperature. They were thrown out.

There was a discrepancy with how to pre-cook and re-cook raw chicken.

The cooler could not maintain the proper temperature, plus a number of other issues dealing with cleanliness, food handling and storage.

Because of the repeat violations, this business had to pay a reinspection fee.

The Buckle at 10214 China Spring Road in Waco failed a renewal inspection with a 77. (23 demerits)

According to the food safety worker, some sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce and coleslaw needed to be relocated for rapid chilling.

Some raw beef patty and chicken were not kept at the right temperature, and some raw tuna steaks thawing at room temp were thrown out.

There was a black mold-like substance on the ice machine deflector and several sticky traps for insects hanging throughout the kitchen and in the food storage area.

There were a number of other issues.

The Butcher’s Cellar at 13701 Woodway Drive in Woodway failed a renewal inspection with a 79. (21 demerits)

According to the food safety worker, some raw lobster tails, chopped bok choy, raw beef and heavy whipping cream were not kept at the right temperature.

Raw trout and raw shelled unpasteurized eggs were stored improperly.

Some needed to remove their bracelets. And others needed to wear hair and beard restraints.

All of these places needed reinspection.

And this week’s Clean Plate award goes to Vitek’s BBQ in Waco.

This is home to the Original Gut Pak, as featured in nationwide food tv shows and many,  many food blogs.

It comes loaded with Fritos corn chips, shredded cheddar cheese, hand chopped brisket, pinto beans, sliced bread (white or wheat), BBQ sauce, and the fixings…

If that makes your mouth water but it is too much for one gut to handle, you can try the one-meat plate with sides, simple sandwich, nachos or taco.

Don’t forget the deviled eggs and dessert.

Report Card” segments are gathered directly from the public records of regular inspections conducted by county health department officials in Central Texas. KWTX does not determine what locations are inspected and does not assign the overall scores which are reflected in percentages. Any questions regarding the status of an inspection, reinspection, or the score reported should be directed to the individual county health departments in which those businesses are located.
